Salsa basic closed position with Josie Neglia

Description

Closed Position Basic combines the forward-and-back salsa basic with a partnered hold. This version uses LA On1 timing: step on 1, 2, 3 and 5, 6, 7, with no additional step on 4 or 8. The leader begins forward with the left foot while the follower begins back with the right.

Closed hold connects the partners through the leader's right hand on the follower's left shoulder blade, the follower's left hand resting on the leader's right upper arm or shoulder, and the remaining hands joined comfortably to the side. Keep enough space for both partners to step freely. Each dancer supports their own weight.

Use this basic to practice staying together through changes of direction before adding turns or a cross body lead. The footwork stays compact while the connection communicates movement without pulling on the arms.

Lead Direction

Move your body with each weight transfer so your partner can feel the forward-and-back direction through the frame. Let the arms accompany that movement instead of pushing or pulling independently. Keep facing each other throughout this basic.

Tips

  • Agree on a comfortable distance before starting; closed hold does not require chest contact.
  • Count 1, 2, 3, then 5, 6, 7 aloud until both partners share the rhythm.
  • Make each step a weight change, including the return steps on 3 and 7.
  • Keep shoulders down, elbows comfortably bent, and fingers relaxed.
  • Use smaller steps if you feel stretched apart or risk stepping on your partner's feet.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning on the partner or using their arms to support your balance.
  • Squeezing the joined hands or locking the elbows.
  • Taking an extra weight-changing step on 4 or 8.
  • Tapping on 3 or 7 instead of transferring weight, leaving the wrong foot free.
  • Taking large steps that pull the frame apart or crowd the partner.
