Side Basic

Also known as: side step basic, lateral basic
Summary
The side basic is a foundational salsa step that shifts weight laterally, helping dancers develop balance, rhythm, and control without traveling forward or backward.
Description
The side basic introduces lateral weight transfer while maintaining the same timing and rhythm as the front basic. Instead of stepping forward and back, dancers move side to side, which helps build stability, coordination, and awareness of lateral movement.
This step is commonly used as a variation of the basic step, as a reset between figures, or when space on the dance floor is limited. Because the movement stays compact and controlled, the side basic allows dancers to maintain connection and timing without needing to redirect momentum.
Although simple in structure, the side basic reinforces clean weight changes and grounded movement. When executed with control and relaxed posture, it supports smooth transitions into turns, travels, or accents while keeping the partnership centered and balanced.

Lead Direction
The side basic does not require active leading when danced on its own, as the follow will naturally mirror the lateral weight changes. When transitioning into or out of the side basic, keep your body centered and avoid pulling the follow sideways. Allow the movement to stay compact so both partners remain balanced and aligned.
Tips
- Step to the side rather than diagonally forward or backward.
- Keep the steps small and controlled to maintain balance.
- Fully transfer weight on each step before returning to neutral.
- Stay relaxed through the upper body and allow the legs to do the work.
Common Mistakes
- Overstepping to the side and losing balance.
- Rushing the return to neutral instead of completing the weight transfer.
